Potocki Wodka
Monthly Newsletter | November 2009

Dear Mark,

Potocki Wodka Poland The month of November is the one when we remember our fathers and mothers, especially those who fell on the battlefield. "For Our Freedom and Yours" has been Poland's motto throughout its many struggles for emancipation over the past two centuries. The participation of Polish soldiers and civilians in the bitter battles of WWII, long forgotten by its former allies, has finally been given due recognition.

We salute the memory of our silent heroes on the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the war and, by the same token encourage our friends, readers and customers to discover a modern Poland, moving into the 21st century with confidence.

Sincerely,
Jan-Roman Potocki

DISCOVER TRUE SPIRIT: Honoring the Silent Heroes of Poland's WWII military forces
The Polish Forces War Memorial The Polish Forces War Memorial on the day of its unveiling

This year marks the 70th anniversary of WWII, and Potocki Wódka would like to honor the half a million Polish men and women who served in the defense of Britain and Poland. As the UK's 'first ally', Polish Forces served with the Allies from the first day of war until the last. These valiant men and women gave their lives on all fronts - on land, at sea and in the air.

In September, The Polish Forces War Memorial was unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum in the UK. Dr. Marek Stella-Sawicki, the Chairman of the project, and his team worked for over three years and raised over £300,000, largely by public and private donations, to commission and build the first and largest Polish Armed Forces War Memorial in the UK.

Arguably the most important Polish event in the UK in the last 10 years, the unveiling ceremony was attended by over 2,500 people including HRH Duke of Kent, Lord Windsor, Lord Ramsey, Lord Parkinson, Polish and English Military Generals and Polish Veterans.

General the Lord Guthrie, a former Chief of the Defense Staff: "We owe much to the Poles who came to join us in our struggle. [. . .] We are right to remember those gallant men and women, who, at a very difficult time in both our countries' histories, were our firm friends and allies."   Read more in a recently launch book titled First to Fight: Poland's contribution to the Allied Victory in WWII.

WÓDKA THE POTOCKI WAY: Xu Lei Exhibition at Aman Summer Palace, Beijing
Day Dream, 2007 silkscreen

Potocki Wódka sponsored a cocktail reception at the beautiful Aman at Summer Palace in Beijing to celebrate recent ink paintings by the Beijing-based contemporary artist Xu Lei.

Combining traditional Chinese ink and brush techniques with the spirit of Western surrealism, Xu Lei's paintings are visually arresting with their saturated ink and color palette and fusion of symbolic motifs from Eastern and Western painting traditions.

The artist and guests enjoying Potocki martinis
Xu Lei's work is represented in major museums and private collections in China and around the world, such as the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. MADE IN POLAND: Miroslaw Balka wows crowds at the Tate Modern
How It Is by Miroslaw Balka at the Tate Modern
How It Is presented at the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern

Polish artist Miroslaw Balka has once again astonished crowds and won critical acclaim for his latest installation project: How It Is in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London. This is the 10th year of the prestigious Unilever Series, and its popularity continued in the opening days of Balka's exhibit, with over 12,000 visitors per day.

How It Is is an experience. It is comprised of a giant, cavernous unlit area which visitors to the museum are invited to walk through. The steel structure is vast - 13 meters tall by 30 meters long (42' x 98'). Visitors enter via a ramp and are enveloped in it's dark interior. Sounds of your fellow visitors footsteps echo throughout.

Like most of Balka's works, How It Is gives the visitor reflections of recent Polish history through the author's personal experience and exploration of common themes. Learn more about Miroslaw Balka.
