The start of a war ended by atomic bombs




The TimesTuesday September 2013—In September 1939 Polish cavalry charged invading German forces. A re-enactment near Warsaw recalls their courage, but they could do little. Poland could not hold out against Nazi Germany and the USSR, and the capital fell to the Germans on September 27.
